Iki Ramen (Koreatown): A Pictorial Essay

Place was full of people doing a special tasting menu today because a sushi chef from some spot in BH was featured. Yuzi Yizu Yazu or something. Anyway, people were having wine, etc.

We stuck to the menu and had a wonderful time again

The non ramen or takoyaki or gyoza courses

Our first experience with Iki Ramen was thru Postmates. It was rainy, I had a cold and wanted soup. Oh, look who’s delivering! The delivery menu is limited but sufficient.

Spicy Tonkotsu

It arrived super hot (poured it from the plastic right away), noodles had perfect texture, broth was savory, not too rich or salty (yay!), pork belly wasn’t bad, not super fresh this time, 2nd delivery was better.

Soy Paper Hand Roll Combo - Spicy Tuna, Blue Crab, Salmon & Yellowtail

I figured soy paper rolls wouldn’t be as disappointing as takeout nori rolls, because they’re not crispy to begin with, but we skipped them on our next delivery.

Good beginning. Can’t wait to go

Echigo Koshihikari Beer - Koshihikari Rice, Hops, Malt

Husband was excited to try the Echigo Flying IPA but they were out so he went with this suggested crisp, light, lager-style beer. Really enjoyable and IMO perfect for lighter Japanese fare.

Sake!

Juicy, fruity, hint of vanilla, rich, but still dry & not overly sweet. Lovely. Complimented the seafood. We ordered 300ml but got a bonus round because there wasn’t enough left in the bottle to sell or store. Domo Arigato!

Spanish Tuna Belly (off-menu special), Ponzu (possibly w/yuzu & a skosh of olive oil), Shaved Truffle, Pickled Tomato, Micro Shiso Greens

OMG! I know been there done that OGs are no longer impressed by this fatty deliciousness. BUT! Me? I was in fatty, buttery, toro heaven! Dish was perfectly seasoned & sauced and added to not overpowered the luscious tuna. I’d ask for an extra tomato next time for a tad more acidity. But I like acid.

Tai Ramen - Tai Broth, Sliced Tai (sea bream), Shio Tare, Micro Shiso, Yuzu Kosho, Radish, Iwanori (algae)

It’s no longer on the menu but I asked if they make it, server asked and they do! It’s delicate, pleasant, and mild, the tai is excellent, but if you’re looking for bold choose something else.

Bold Coming Right Up… Spicy Tonkotsu - Shoyu, Pork Bone Broth, Spicy Miso, Slow Braised Niman Ranch Pork Belly (kakuni), Kikurage (wood ear shroom, fungus), Sweet Corn, Scallions, Seasoned Egg, Nori

Uh yum! The pork belly was really fatty but luscious & fresh, broth is perfectly seasoned, not too salty (i love this) or overwhelmingly rich. Our takeout noodles were a little harder than in-house (maybe on purpose).

Extra Pork Belly

We were sharing the ramen so why not.

We must of been nice not naughty because we received complimentary cups of Plum Wine

Sweet & juicy like a plum. :slightly_smiling_face:

Black Sesame Creme Brûlée

If you like black sesame desserts with thick, rich, sesame purée (me!) this might be a little mild for you. It has a delicate, nutty creaminess & a thin glaze of crackle on top. Perfect for those who like lite, not overly sweet desserts. I think someone mentioned complimentary tea with dessert upon request but I forgot to ask.

If permitted I plan on working my way thru the whole menu. The dishes are delicious, refined and so satisfying. Service is sweet and Sergio is in his house. Quirky side note: there was 2 sets of twins dining when we were there. Trippy.

Our meal was $113 before tip, but if you stick with Beer and don’t get $34 delicacies like Spanish Tuna Belly your bill will be reasonable.

Loved your report @J_L and all the gems others have done on this thread!

Happy Iki Eating!

I saw that interesting thing too… at first. Then it turned into that thing I love about L.A. - Hispanic, Asian, Black, White, Middle Eastern, Gay, Straight…Twins. Americans! We are definitely a city of food lovers and seekers.

P.S. No Mazemen or Takoyaki yet. We live pretty close so I knew it wouldn’t be a one-off thing. I didn’t want to glutton-out on the first visit. TBC…

warung bali seafood bento | grilled snapper and shrimp, scallop and mushroom, urab sayur (balinese mixed vegetable), acar (pickled vegetables), matah sambal, special sambal, rice
Anything grilled over binchotan’s basically a winner. Upon opening this bento, that hit of unique sweet smokiness coming from the shrimp and snapper immediately had me salivating! This is a very well executed bento.

Loved the sweet and spicy special bali sauce over these perfectly grilled shrimp.

The lone photo obtained because my friend was so sure that it was a tater tot and not crispy rice…

The ramen here is out of this world. We had the black garlic tonkotsu and the yuzu shio. Both were really fine versions, but the yuzu shio surprised me the most because the broth reminded me of chicken pho growing up where I would then squeeze in 2-3 lime wedges because I liked the citrus. Noodles were great and the charsu is probably the best charsu I’ve ever had.

Iki is back to firing on all cylinders. Sadly, the soft tofu dish from the before times has not made its way back to the menu. I also think the mazemens are a tad different? But as @attran99 the yuzu shio is so remarkable. You can taste the yuzu with each sip of broth. Unbelievable.

Also a pro tip that I reckon has been mentioned here but maybe not: apparently, you can sit at Southland, the beer (and a few natty wines) bar next door, then order at the counter at Iki. The only difference is that you pay when you order! But it’s great for drinking good beer/avoiding the Iki wait. (We probably saved ourselves 30-45 minutes by doing this last night.)

Wait…does Southland let you eat your Iki order inside Southland?

Yes, that’s what I’m saying. At the very least, you can eat at Southland’s outdoor tables. The Iki waiter delivered all our food to us, portioned it appropriately, etc as we were sitting at Southland’s tables! It’s kinda a game-changer…

(From what I understand, you can eat in the bar too though.)

by the way the southland bartender recommended that we do this. they clearly want it to happen.

Thank you! This is a great tip. I’m no beer expert, but I have enjoyed the selection at Southland the couple times I’ve been.

It also allows you to completely avoid the Iki wait… :zipper_mouth_face:

I was just here for lunch on Monday. I showed up around 2:15 and had the place to myself. There’s a small amount of outdoor seating, so I went for that.

I had the kaisen don, which was a beautifully presented and delicious chirashi bowl with an unusual wasabi sauce splashed across the salmon, tuna, and kampachi, and a yuzu sauce for the scallops. It was delicious, light, and refreshing on an extremely hot day.

Shio koji ice cream for dessert. That is some of the best ice cream I’ve had anywhere. It tastes a bit like malted milk, with a strong malt flavor and a mild salt flavor. Very creamy.

That was my first visit and I cannot wait to go back. When it’s less hot I’ll try the ramen.
