While I’m pleased with this, I’m thinking it’ll take a while for my partner - the “it’s close to the ‘dangerous’ date so it must be thrown out!” person - to adapt.
I def am in favor of this. It’s only b/c of FTC that I learned that “sell by” or “best used by” is not an indicator of actual safety. I can’t imagine how unknowledgeable the average consumer might be…
I’m happy with this as well. Even though I know the intent of a “sell by” date, I’ve never understood what it assumes as far as when we’ll actually eat the food - same day? Next day? Next week? Looking at you, roast chicken with an October 4 “sell by” date currently in my fridge.
Tangent: I use rotisserie chicken (already taken apart) from Bristol Farms all the time for my salad. I stretch out its use by dividing into portions and freezing.
I assume that’s okay…
I have half a tub of whitefish salad from Costco that’s labeled best by July 7. It’s fine, our fridge keeps things well. If it were actually off it would smell bad or be moldy.
