LA Restaurant Hot Takes

True dat! Still love cruising by to pick a couple of par baked pies to bring home.

What say you @JeetKuneBao

not even close, because LA donut shops don’t have flat tops (usually) so the variety of choice is restricted.

Agreed… as someone who grew up in South LA, as a kid our corner stores had delis and could have easily been akin to NYC Bodegas… but they went in another direction with the donut/liquor store way of doing business.

I love both to death.

Bodega/deli has so many more options with that flat top and wider selection of drinks/chips. The menus are insane especially in the “gourmet deli” you see in certain parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Not a fair comparison.

The donuts of course are better than anything than Dunkin. Dunkin is pure trash donuts.

I am constantly craving a maple bar, chocolate bar, apple fritter/bear claw, and old fashion buttermilk with some milk. I miss it so much.

Technically someone could before flying out to NYC stop at a LA donut shop. Fly to NYC. Stop at a bodega and get a baconeggcheese or chopped cheese and double fist it with some Arizonas as a bev and a bag of chips. That would be the ultimate experience lol

Would Alameda Liquor in Burbank be classified as a bodega? it’s a full on liquor store with this attached.

Yep! There are handful of these old style corner store/deli models still working. The remainder in South L.A., most of them focus on Mexican food.

Vendome Liquor on Robertson in Beverly Hills also has a a full deli. My son is a big fan of their cold sandwiches, but none of us have tried their hot sandwiches.

a cousin and homies started up something in the valley called Archie’s which seems to be a sort of a stoner bodega … Google Maps

Excellent location. Lots surly ex NYCers in NoHo. Wish them well…

This isn’t a massive hot take or anything like that, but R+D Kitchen in Santa Monica is always a zoo for lunch on weekends but today Hillstone was pleasant and not packed. Might be the move (for lunch; Hillstone is always a zoo at dinner).

Wow, I was there today too. The French dip always hits the spot for me.

Was always partial to Pizzetta 211 when I lived up there.

Sorry :grimacing: back to L.A. restaurant hot takes now…

Their commitment to only offering the 12 inch is so bizarre. The normal sized pies were the best until they closed during the pandemic.

Ceci’s Gastronomia >> Bestia and way more Italian.

Erewhon prepared food is better than 1/4 of the places on the LA Times 101 list.

The best thing at Mexicali Taco is the burrito.

The new “mushroom meat” dish at Majordomo is great.

I think Erewhon’s prepared food is bland and disgusting. What do you like?

Their overnight oats are absurdly good, given that they are oats. And I love their tempeh bacon breakfast burrito. And their orange-chicken-style cauliflower.

That’ll be $39.99 please.
