March 2024 Rundown

I think you might have gotten the regular kogi taco truck that is there daily. The tacos por vida menu is quite a bit simpler and they were only there Friday night and the line was ~2 hours long. Here’s a picture I took of the menu before we gave up. According to his Instagram they will be back Tues/wed though.

I like it. Would have liked a little more garlic with thin slices. Super comforting dish without being heavy. Not a lot of Thai places are doing this dish.
The best I had for this dish was Fish Cheeks in NYC.

Dessert bang bang.

We are in mango sticky rice season now!

Yah, Man! :mango: :two_hearts:

Had this recently at Spicy Sugar Thai. We were full and had asked for the check when we heard a lady say she’s from Thailand but likes Chef Katt’s mango sticky rice the best. Okay, we’ll have one! She was right on.

Gone fishing…

We ate at the counter watching the uni scallop ceviche being prepared and also regretted not ordering it @theplankt. We still ate good because Holbox.

Live Santa Barbara Spot Prawn (w/fried heads :stuck_out_tongue:) & Baja Bay Scallop Aguachile, Avocado, Cucumber

I think we order aguachile every time we go.

Sopa de Mariscos - Local Rockfish, Shrimp, Kanpachi, Mussels & House-made Fish Sausage

So delicious and spicy. Still haven’t had it with uni broth aka sopa de unicornio. I’m thinking about asking for an uni add-on next time and mixing it in myself @PorkyBelly!

Baja Shrimp & Baja Fish (local rockfish) Tacos

Sergio aka Chef Cetina was on the line with his crew expediting and serving customers. We hadn’t been in a while and felt the changes - expansion, work stations and increased staff to go with the exploding popularity. Everything is running really well. The line is long but moves fast with the help of a mobile order taker - we barely perused the menu before it was our turn.

Fishing With Dynamite…

Deutz Brut Classic Champagne & Old Fashioned

Hubs aka the Goldilocks of Ice Cubes thought the old-fashioned was a bit watery with a too cloudy ice cube.

We re-upped on the Princess!

New England Clam Chowdah w/Weiser Farms Potatoes, Nueske’s Bacon

Lotsa flavor, not too floury, but Nueske’s bacon is a little too smokey for clam chowder imo… others might beg to differ.

Fries + Malt Vinegar Aioli

These are worthy of the fry thread. The waiter almost gave us a 2nd order belonging to another customer and my husband tried to keep it.

Wild New Caledonian Prawns in Garlic Butter & Lemon Scented Jasmine Rice

Prawns were a smidge overcooked but still delicious. The lemon scented jasmine rice soaking up the prawn sauce was the thing! :hearts:

Key Lime Pie… of course!

Gone Clamming… at Connie & Ted in WeHo.

Mesa Giunco Vermentino + Was an Old-fashioned

Old-fashion was “Very good.”

Cupid’s Little Helper - 4 Roses Bourbon, Rosemary Infused Amaretto, Lemon, Egg Whites, Bitters

Menemsha, Chebooktook, Wellfleet, Kumamoto

C&T oysters, excellent as always.

Fried Clam Bellies & Fries

Dug up on a beach in MA and sent to a kitchen in WeHo. These are even better than when C&T first opened. Bigger bellies, creamy, sweet, briny, fried perfectly crispy. Don’t forget a splash of malt vinegar. I was one happy New England transplant! :hearts: Beware: getting these babies onto a plate in California comes with a hefty price tag of $49+.

Friday Special - Gumbo

Hubs ordered Gumbo! Wasn’t sure what to expect from gumbo at C&T. Delicious! Shredded chicken, andouille sausage, plump shrimp, okra, good rice and a saucy dark roux touched w/smokiness. Ask for tabasco to give it a little spark.

The Blondie… of course!

Psst… the C&T meal was actually in February but it goes with the theme. The service from the hostess to the servers and bussers was really friendly and totally on point. I think a lot of NE transplants dine at C&T. We could hear conversations about familiar places at nearby tables. Sigh…

I’d totally pony up for those clam bellies. Still way cheaper than airfare out to Nantucket…

Clearing out the photo feed:

Katsu sandwich from Gardena Bowl. The chicken was great, but the cabbage really makes it for me. Crunchy and bright, with a touch of vegetable sweetness. Honestly, all sandwich lettuce should be replaced with cabbage. I think it was about $11 before tax, with ample french fries.

Two carnitas tacos from Carnitas Don Goyo on Imperial Highway near Compton Ave., just east of Hawkins Burgers. No relation to the Carnitas Don Goya of Downey. Portion (I went with a mixto) was ample, the carnitas were unctuous without being greasy. The downside was the tortillas: not made to order, and they did not spend enough time on the griddle, so they were a little crumbly. The pickled onion mix was the highlight. A really nice blend of sweetness and fruity heat from the thinly sliced habañero. Five dollars for two tacos. I don’t think I’ll be back.

I love cabbage w/ katsu, but I actually don’t know I’d about it in a BLT. I’ll have to think about that some more.

you got your green cabbage, your red, savoy, napa… one of ‘em must complement the bacon and tomato!

Butter lettuce FTW on a BLT (or BLAT)

Oh my god, my absolute favorite. My wife prefers something crunchy like iceberg or romaine heart but I’m team butter lettuce all the way

Team Butter Lettuce as well!

NO!!! I cannot STAND butter lettuce (partner really likes it, though).

I feel about butter lettuce the way Madonna feels about hydrangeas (look it up).

This might be better suited for FTC Confessions, but I prefer Iceberg for sandwiches and salads. Probably a throw-back from my lower-middle-class upbringing in the 70s and 80s, but I love it.
