Pizzeria Sei

Yeah that Margherita Special is the winner for me. Server said to let it sit for thirty seconds before making sure to take big bites and always getting cheese. For me that meant each slice was a messy two biter.

Then the beef tongue, then the lamb + as @PorkyBelly mentioned the canned bluefin belly. Had that on a little toast with some raw garlic (?) could be misremembering that part but delicious all the way

Oh I agree, most indubitably!

That marg special is the platonic ideal of margherita!

So we’re finally making it to Sei on Saturday. 4 of us. Feels like the special marg, mala lamb and then beef tongue + funghi crostini + tiramisu? And potentially the filetto if that one is available, although I assume the tomatoes may be out of season… ANything else that is must order?

Also, looks like no alcohol sold but is it BYOB?

they have alcohol

Yep, NVM! Was an old review or something!

They have a pretty good, thoughtful wine list. $25 Corkage if you BYO.

Proscuitto plate and caesars are great as well. What time are you guys going?

Chances of seeing Sergio is much higher during lunch if that’s something you prefer.

Ha, yeah, unfortunately, the only day/time we could get to work on our end this holiday. But seems like Sergio has trained his apprentices well!

There today with reservations at 5pm. Sergio was in the house. Still boggles my mind that people were able to get seats as walk ins, meanwhile I have reservations 2 months from now for Bianco.

You can walk in at Bianco on a Friday at lunch. Dinner walk-ins seem to be are harder now, but I’ve still had luck at the beginning or end of service.

Don’t even know where to start… I saw Sei on a few posters’ Favorites of 2023 lists and I was skeptical. Even as a pizza lover, how could pizza be that good? I’ve hit most of the great spots in NYC, LA, SF and did the Italy thing a long time ago. I love pizza, it’s my favorite food in the world, yet I didn’t think it could reach such highs. With that said, let me start from “least” good to best…

  1. Fungi crostini - Flavorful, finely diced mushrooms, topped with a sheer layer of lardo on top of a crusty crostini. Delicious, although a bit heavy, i.e. the crostini was pretty drenched in olive oil. In the end, a very solid crostini but probably unnecessary.
  2. Bismarck - My least favorite pizza. It was good. The crust, as everyone has said, was incredible… crusty on the outside, incredibly chewy on the inside, just the right amount of salt and char. But the actual toppings were “fine.” I’ve had other versions of this that can rival it and maybe the real issue was just the other pizzas we had were so special and this was more generic.
  3. Parking - We got very lucky! Pulled up just as a driver pulled out of the spot right in front of the restaurant. And we got there at 5:56PM so it was free. Others have written about the difficulty in finding parking so this was a great start to the evening, lol!
  4. The wine - For $11, that Pinot was wonderful. No complaints!
  5. The service - Very attentive, super friendly and helpful. I always appreciate service that finds that balance of being on top of things without being too frenzied or around you all night. The Sei folks did a great job!
  6. Wagyu pizza - I sadly only tried a piece of the wagyu, which was impossibly melt in your mouth. But my 12yo couldn’t stop saying how this was his favorite bite of beef in the world. While he offered me a slice, I just couldn’t take it, seeing how much he enjoyed it. Both sons could not stop raving about the beef on their way home and said this was by far their favorite pizza ever.
  7. Mala lamb pizza - We almost passed on this because our waiter said it was very spicy. But thankfully, we took a chance. I often have trouble describing foods I love… I know in my mind what I love about it, but difficult to put into words. No such issues here. I loved … that the heat was only a 6 or 7 but held that plateau for a long time, just a very nice, subtle burn…how all the flavors melded together and complemented each other, the lamb sausage was like the best chinese lamb skewer you’ve ever had…the cilantro sprigs added another layer of herbaceousness and floral aroma that paired so welll… the creme fraiche helped cool the mouth against the spiciness… the acidity of the tomatoes cut the fat and spice again… I’m sure I’m missing other elements but man it is just this medley of flavors in your mouth and then the crust… when you’re stuffed but the crust has some of that remaining spice, oil, etc, it’s impossible not to eat it. This is by far my favorite pizza ever and possibly my favorite single bite of food ever. Cannot be missed!

glad you liked the lamb. there was an earlier iteration of the lamb that used a drizzle of maple syrup instead of pimento bell peppers for the sweet component to balance the heat. not sure which one I liked better, both were great.

no tiramisu or margarita?

Ah, we were stuffed and couldn’t fit the tiramisu! And actually my wife had the special margarita. I sadly did not even get a taste, which says something though bc my wife at the whole thing and she is not a big pizza eater.

She kept saying we should have just gotten the regular margarita bc she can’t tell the difference, but I was like, uh, you ate the whole thing so something was different, lol!

I’m not sure what I would have liked better, the pimento bell peppers or maple syrup. I can see how the sweetness would add another layer of complexity to the pizza but I sort of loved that it was entirely savory. Truly one of my all-time bites. I was skeptical about the cilantro flowers but they were so fragrant!
