Have you considered Zinc? I haven’t been wowed by the food there, but my vegetarian family loves it and the space is certainly nice. Should be easily under budget too.

Okay, I got her flexible on the time. She likes the Bar Ama menu. We’ll see what they respond with. Also! They live in the Pasadena area. Aren’t there a couple of interesting new spots there?

Yes, they aren’t taking reservations right now. :smirk:

You said she wants something different–and if you’re still looking around–but not many brunches these days seem to do much in the “interesting” category beyond the ones already mentioned (how I miss the Orsa and Winston brunch :sob:). Lots of places will be vegetarian friendly it seems because they all have those same menu items that are checking boxes–eggs, pancakes, light salads, etc.

But maybe Zinque DTLA? Or Sibling Rival?

Fwiw this place seems popular but I imagine if they live in Pas they’ve already been here?

Perle in Pasadena has a vegan equivalent for every dish on the menu. Don’t know if they’re doing brunch

Yep, that’s what I was going to suggest, but unsure about brunch and pricing.

Haha I meant she wants something different than Ethiopian. But now that you mention it there aren’t a lot of interesting brunch choices. Bummed I missed out on O&Ws brunch!

These are both good options. The photos on Sibling Rival look good but I can’t find the menu on the site.

Have you followed up with Manuela? Menu looks on point and it’s a great space for a group.

Yah, they responded. My sister and I are discussing it right now. They did a lovely baby shower for us in 2019 - prix-fixe, family-style, custom menu cards, great service, lots of food. It’s $45 pp which I think is reasonable, so she may have to come up.

A perplexing thing we’re finding is a lot of places won’t take reservations since re-opening for dine-in (walk-in only). I asked the hostess at Cafe Gratitude why this is a thing and she said she hasn’t been able to figure that out.

Bar Ama is $50+ pp for prix-fixe. The reason for the fixed menu is not just to keep the price down. It’s that they want a strictly vegetarian menu. But it’s looking like prix-fixe is way pricier than ordering off the menu, so…

Probably fully booked without reservations.

I bet some restaurants are worried about large parties no showing and leaving am empty dining room. It’s surprising how few places have a penalty with late cancelation on large parties.

Doesn’t tick all the boxes, and I think only outside dining (lovely patio that’s well off the street): Zephyr https://www.zephyrpasadena.com/

Might be worth calling to see if they would do a fixed menu (and I’ve no idea about the alcohol situation but guessing probably not … you know, maybe not a great recommendation for this event, but possibly a decent idea for the Pasadena relatives to check out at some point if they’re looking for a place to eat).

Wonder if Cacao Mexicatessan in Eagle Rock would work? Not fixed price, no idea if they’re serving inside or out, but good food and veg friendly: http://www.cacaodeli.com/

Thanks @ElsieDee! We’re locked-in at Manuela. But I’ll keep everything on the list for another time!
