What are the essential stops for a two-day tour of tacos?

from my very limited experience of taking a couple different groups of taco n00bs around LA, i don’t know if this list is necessarily the best list for visitors. reactions to Mariscos Jalisco, Los Originales, and Burritos La Palma were somewhat mixed, to my great disappointment. Guerilla tacos, by contrast, was uniformly liked, as was Holbox

I braved the 2 hour line in El Sereno last year and tried almost everything except for their :octopus: since they sold out. I thought they were just okay…

Chicen Itza!!

Mariscos El Yaqui in Orange County does some pretty killer fish tacos on flour - definitely recommend the one with the whole fried chile. Also last time I had the fish tacos at Angry Egret they were on flour (I believe from Mejorado tho I could be wrong).

@Robert yup! it is bad - no smoke, mushy tortilla, bland salsa. It was solid at the old location, but in my two recent-ish visits to Silver Lake it was a disaster. Asadero Chikali, Mexicali, Perro 110, Sonoratown all make markedly better versions of a similar thing.

The truck has seen better days but this is still better than anything else not named Holbox or Guerilla - in fact this was probably the best visit in recent memory. Inflation is pain though - $26 and change for 5 tacos and a canned drink. Sergio in the house.

Still under the Hyperion overpass, down by the river?

I was using my phone while I was waiting for my fish tacos one time and this homeless person across the street might’ve thought I was secretly filming him. Anyway, he ran across the street with a metal pole in his hands yelling at me to stop whatever I was doing or he was going to beat the shit outta me…

Such is LA these days. Said encampment was half the size as last time I was there and somewhat cleaner.

Get your fish taco fix before Sergio retires

Yikes. Glad you were not hurt.

An unhoused person kicked me car WHILE I WAS IN IT in West LA. It is indeed, unfortunately, just the state of LA today. :frowning:

I think I know where I’m gonna go for lunch this weekend…

maybe if FTCers went to high-end sushi less often, theyd be able to band together and buy the recipes/truck and become Sergio themselves while Ricky finally can sit back in retirement…

Thanks for the heads up, that Mitsuwa Centinela/Venice intersection keeps blowing up.

Yeah, I haven’t tried them, but they were mentioned up the thread. They usually seem to pop up in locations further east

checked out perro 110 (PERRO (@perro_110) • Instagram photos and videos , 8017 atlantic ave. in cudahy, and other popups)

  1. their flour tortillas are THICCK - almost at the thickness of a scallion pancake. they also sell these on their own in ziplocs
  2. it’s a massive taco, and everything in the taco is high-quality - both chile pepper and the asada have great smoke, and the asada is juicy. they look after the details - the radish is notably fresh and the lime is a big wedge
  3. next time i would ask for less beans than the standard, and an extra pepper, maybe also lighter on the chipotle crema - everything piled onto the standard starts to crowd out the smoke on the asada.

also revisited Barbacoa Estilo Taxco Guerrero (weekends in the lot at 5609 mckinley ave.)
their barbacoa is as good as its ever been - i’ve only visited a handful of the barbacoa specialists (Aqui es Texcoco, B. Estilo Atotonilco El Grande, Barba Kush), but this remains the best barbacoa i’ve had in LA, and their consomme is pure essence of lamb

also checked out two places written up in LA Taco:
Taqueria Juquilita - their al pastor is the juiciest i’ve had in LA - I’d go later in the evening when their operation is more fully in swing (Taco of the Week: A New Contender For L.A.’s 'Best Al Pastor' Emerges in the Streets of Hollywood ~ L.A. TACO)
Tacos La Carreta - this place is “specializing in Sinaloa-style carne asada tacos”. the chorreada and the torito are tasty, but i found the asada lacking much personality. need to visit again to see if i was just too full (This Hidden Truck In SELA Has Some of L.A.’s Best Carne Asada ~ L.A. TACO)

Same. I think they have a nice selection of salsas and that helps but the asada has never been as good as the descriptions from that article, before or after it was written.

Same.

checked out Simon (written up in LA Taco: Simón's 'Mariscos Chingones' Is Doing Mexican Fine Dining-Level Seafood Out of a Food Truck In Silver Lake - L.A. TACO)
their tacos are very photogenic and i was going to take pictures for the forum, but then the customer in front of me started going wild doing a whole photoshoot with a dlsr, posing the salsa jars and whatnot, so i decided against pictures… i really want to like this place, and their octopus barbacoa is very good, but their tacos seemed to generally suffer from being pretty dry, and this seems to start with their tortillas. but maybe this is just because the sample size is 1 so far. i had extremely high hopes for their fish al pastor, but the al pastor flavor was way too mild; i wonder if they would be better served marinating smaller pieces rather than larger slabs. i also had high hopes for the gobernador, but it was super dry inside the melted cheese casing. the soft-shell crab taco was not bad, but also not cravable in the way the mariscos jalisco shrimp taco is.

all roads lead back to holbox, and i ended up going there afterwards. has the pescado al carbon taco always come with crispy skin??? insanely good. torta with baja fish also insanely good.

the mushroom tacos at loqui and tacos 1986 are super simple, but surprisingly tasty, and good vegan options if anyone is ever in need of one…

Not sure I totally disagree, but I’m a little more enthusiastic. The Octopus Barbacoa was quite good, not too dry, and the Gobernador, while a little too chicharron de queso and not melty, had nicely cooked aka not overcooked shrimp. On corn not flour though, so maybe that’s why I wasn’t super excited by the gobernador.

With all that said, neither of those were super cravable, agree, but it’s a big, ambitious menu, and I would definitely go back to try more. They have ceviches, aguachiles, and the salsas are good. But to your point, the shadow of Holbox looms large.

yeah - certainly this truck is in no way terrible! my moderate disappointment was largely a factor of the hype from LATaco going into it, and i still need to visit them a few more times to see what their range is, but based on their menu and the clear effort going into all their dishes and their salsas, it feels like they should be able to achieve holbox-approximate level of quality, which would be an awesome addition to the must-see taco list. then again theyve also only started this truck recently so hope springs eternal
