Best Pizza by the Slice?

I’m keen on trying Lucali, but just saw a post somewhere I forget where… arrive Saturday 4:30pm 80 deep, given number at 5:30 opening for table around 9pm :scream:

Umm no thanks. I am going to Other Half brewery which is fairly close to Lucali but not worth the wait. Still working on my plans for Brooklyn but will probably do Luger’s burger for lunch then head over to Mekelburgs to visit my boy Dan. Might reverse the order. With the kids in tow it’s hard to wait at DiFara or Lucali. Maybe add Paulie Gee’s to the itinerary.

you’re right, I am thinking DiFara.

Love Other Half, great call.

I’d also say Grimm is worth a visit if you’ve got time for more beer, and it’s pretty close to Roberta’s, which is fun and very different from the LA version, in my experience.

I think I may have subconsciously left them off the list because of the recent lukewarm reviews of the Culver City branch. Will keep this in mind.

In my recollection, it was maybe a 20 minute ride from the East 80s, but according to Google Maps, it’s more like 30. I guess these were longer lunches than I remembered

If you do go, I recommend getting plain slices with skim mozzarella instead of fresh. Part of the appeal of Patsy’s East Harlem is it’s the only place in NYC you can get coal oven pizza by the slice. The toppings are lower quality than, say, Grimaldi’s, but the crust is just magical imo.

Here are a couple of great Serious Eats pieces on what makes Patsy’s so special:

The whole Grimaldi’s saga is so strange. Here’s the newest twist.

Good find, @WesSabi, thanks.

Look at this one. Weird.

That is by far their best offering.

Hmm speaking of clams…

Anywhere in LA /So Cal you can get a Frank Pepe’s style White Clam Pizza?

The best one we’ve had was from Urbn Pizza at Smorgasburg. Very close…

I believe it’s the same company as @Dommy’s above Smorgasburg one, but I really enjoyed the New Haven style pizza at URBN San Diego if you’re ever down that way:

Thanks guys I’ll keep them in mind when I am at Smorgasburg. Maybe this weekend cause I wanna finally try this Taco 1986 place you guys been talking about, make a return visit to Ugly Drum Pastrami and a triplescoop of Japanese Neapolitan/Sticky Rice and Mango/Ube Malted Krunch at Wanderlust

It’s probably gotten much, much worse thanks to Ugly Delicious, but when I used to go to Lucali, you could call on a weeknight and put your name down over the phone. Then you could take your merry time to get there. Also BYO, so was a nice experience.

For Difara, I was able to go on a weekday at 2-3pm, and there were maybe three people in the pizza shop. Not sure if that’s always feasible but worth mentioning.

Lucali is the one I’m most excited about. Again didn’t get to enjoy on a recent trip

@NYCtoLA Difarra isn’t too bad, it was about an hour wait when I went on a weekend afternoon. What did you think of Lucali?

@Nemroz might make an attempt one of these days, it’s a bit of hike from Manhattan which makes it a bit more challenging esp. if the wait times are as bad as what I read.

Lucali was my favorite pizza in NYC when I lived there - if were to visit, it would definitely be on my list of must-do’s, unless the line is 2-3 hours now and there’s no way to call in.

Looks like I’ll have to brave the crowd one of these days :sleepy: and it’s all your fault
