Cheesy, Savory, Delicious! Meat Lovers, Vegetarian and Vegan! A Pizza Journey - Superfine, Il Romanista, DeSano, Pizza Wagon of Brooklyn, Pizzeria Mozza, South End, L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, Prime, Lupetti, Triple Beam and More! [Thoughts + Pics]

All joking aside, LA would have to be a contender for best pizza city in the US. Huge change in the past 15 years.

I have not been b/f, but I will def be going to this one!

The pizza scene on the westside alone is unreal. This, Ghisallo, Emmy Squared (which I think is seriously overpriced, if very tasty), and then Stella Barra (haven’t been in yrs), South End (ditto), and Milo and Olive, and then, in the more affordable range, Prime. I haven’t had Santa Monica Pizza Kitchen in a few yrs, but they were totally respectable back when I was ordering from them pretty regularly.

Bang bang w/ Augie’s and Sunnie Blue (which I still have yet to try!) for the healthiest eating ever. Hmmm…

Add a burger at Heavy Handed to that bang-bang and then you’re really talking healthy eating! (I haven’t been there yet but plan to try it soon.)

Totally agree on the embarrassment of pizza riches on the Westside. We also still really like Vito’s. And I feel like I’m neglecting long time favorites like South End because there are so many new places to try.

Do post your thoughts about Heavy Handed after trying. I think it’s… fine (based only one 1 visit), but not particularly crave-worthy (even for the fries, which are technically very good but lacking in a certain something, IMHO).

I keep forgetting about Vito’s! That place is really close, and we really enjoyed it shortly after it opened. Not clear to me if there was a mild downhill alert, but it would be an easy enough thing to check for myself.

I thought HH’s burger was great; umami bomb with some awesome crunchiness on the edges. But that price is pretty damn high for a smash burger; that’s Father’s Office territory.

Fries were replacement level.

What is “replacement level???”

Believe this comes from VORP, a baseball stat (now in other sports too) that measures how much better a player is than an average available low-cost player.

Replacement-level is basically the low end of average, what you’d expect from a random non-specialist.

I was able to check out the DTLA Prince St over the weekend. Man that square slice is good - just like I remember the NY version.

But Prime is still my daily driver. Look at this textural perfection.

Is that from Burbank or DTLA? Looks so good!

Burbank! The location/parking lot is awesome.

The return of La Morra

La Morra opening takeout and delivery location in Studio City/Sherman Oaks

“La Morra Pizzeria is back. The blistered, wood-fired pizza specialist that started from a traveling trailer years ago has now cooked up a new delivery and takeout-only spot in the Sherman Oaks area, and it opens today, Friday, April 14. The new La Morra lands at 7333 Fulton Avenue and will offer service across the Valley (think Studio City, Burbank, Encino, and beyond) as well as Bel Air, “

Agreed!! I also think this location serves the best, most consistent product of all the locations I’ve been to.

Got a couple thick cheese slices from Apollonia’s last night. Heavy hitters - had to save one for reheating today. The crust’s crispy thickness can be a little taxing on the corner slice but pays off better on a middle slice. Comparable to Quarter Sheets in many ways except that the sauce on top is absolutely killer and beats anything I’ve had recently. There’s a lot of it without sacrificing balance.

That’s slightly misleading. He built the trailer-oven in 2016 and moved to LA the next year.

Good call. Can’t prove this, but have found Apollonia’s thicker/crispier/more shattering over the last few years, not always a positive. But prefer their sauce/toppings to Quarter Sheets, which I find underdressed.

Yeah, chewing the corner began to feel like work after a while. Depth of flavor on the cheese and sauce mostly makes up for it, though. Speaking of underdressed, we had De La Nonna a few weeks ago and one of the end pieces had straight up nothing on it. No sauce, no cheese. I guess there was oil and salt but that was it. Nothing that dramatic at Quarter Sheets, luckily!

I’m not saying that Prime is busy because of 4/20, but it does seem pretty busy today and it’s 4/20.
