168, mitsuwa, sunmerry (just a few examples) limit the amount of people inside. but the issue is that once you get inside, no one really cares.

on recent visits to local Chinese markets and bakeries, I had Chinese aunties/uncles reach around/over me to grab stuff or attempt to pay before me. they are always wearing masks and sometimes even gloves, but do not seem to really understand (or care about) social distancing.

I’ll go when it quiets down. They are one of the originators off the stripe with the brown sugar boba if not the OG. Looks good

I don’t want to go so far as to call it ‘rudeness’, but they just have bad habits built over time in an environment that makes actions like that the norm. Makes an even better case for the advice, to be extra careful in these markets, as you’re more likely to come across something unexpected like people reaching over your shoulder.

Having dealt with this for the past 50 years (ever since the US’ Chinese immigration laws were changed), I’ll call a spade a spade. These people (particularly the little old ladies) are rude.

Zui Xiang Yuan in Alhambra is open and selling frozen dumplings. However you have to order for next day pickup. They are closed Wednesdays.

on valley in the strip mall east of the wendy’s.

rude by western standards, but having been overseas and observed that the concept of a straight line is rather nebulous there, i wouldn’t take it personally. folks hailing from boston seem to think they’re the most vicious/aggressive drivers in the US. bostoners wouldn’t last 30 seconds driving in taipei. cars seemingly travel a scooter’s width distance away from each other, and scooters (typically bearing a passenger behind the rider holding on using no hands) zip in & out between cars with maybe 2" clearance on both sides. and if you leave more than a scooter’s width between you and the car in front of you. other drivers wedge in and expect you to give them right of way. the first time i rode in a car in taipei some 30 years ago, i didn’t realize how tightly i’d been holding on to the door handle until we stopped. it is what it is.

@secretasianman You know how Chinese people fight over who pays the bill at restaurants? Imagine that mentality, but fighting over who gets into a museum room first in China. I’ve had that experience… so much for an organized line. Quite fun, if you’re willing to get pushed around, like a mosh pit at a rock concert.

i’ve not experienced that, but the only museum i recall visiting was the national museum in taipei. i think i still have a sweatshirt from that visit. and IIRC they had jade that looked like pork.

They also have jade(?) that resembles bok choy. This area of the museum was also my most memorable.

Great observations! Its not just Asia though. Have you ever seen parking in Paris? Full contact sport.
On our honeymoon many years ago I got so frustrated with people pushing in line that I barked at a German kid, “I’m in front of you!” The Greek train station went silent and my British friend said, “You know Yank, they thought you were going to pull a gun and start shooting.”

well, no one likes to made aware of their own provincialism especially in front of witnesses. someone i really respect has spent a bit of time in hawaii. his advice to me: “don’t comment on how different the customs are. you’ll eventually see that the way that they do things makes sense.”

i only drove when leaving paris to explore regions south. (the metro wasn’t on strike while i was in paris.) i wish americans used turnabouts the way the french do, not to mention how strictly the french observe “slow traffic to the right”.

i hate to admit it’s the only part of the museum i remember.

Great place. So is Shaanxi Garden.

if you like shaanxi cuisine, you might try places like xi’an tasty, qin west or even liang’s kitchen. i personally prefer them over shaanxi garden. but i have no idea if any of the places i mentioned are open during the quarantine.

Eater list from today

I went to Bang Bang Noodles last week. I guess it’s in the same category. Pre-order lets you skip their previous long lines. East downtown is not far from SGV.

that’s the guy doing each bowl on the sidewalk in highland park. i’m hoping to watch him make each bowl even if it means waiting in a long line. he’s actually not that far from me personally since i’m near the top of ave 64 in pasadena.

The pick up window is downtown around the arts district. He moved temporarily from highland park. You can still watch the show, but he’s set up quite a few feet away behind a closed parking lot gate.

I picked up tonight. Not sure if he is switching locations on the reg but tonight he was set up inside of the York in Highland Park. The texture of the noodles was :fire:

hmm. it’s good to know he’s an option as long he’s a safe option, but i was pretty sure what he was doing originally wouldn’t qualify under the ban.
